In solidarity with our sister, Ilhan Omar, we share this statement

Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) denounces the racist incitement from President Trump toward Representative Ilhan Omar and the initially tepid or nonexistent defense coming from most Democratic elected officials.

Trump targets Rep. Omar for her Muslim faith, for her bravery in standing up to Islamophobia, and to divide us from each other. As the recent murder of 50 Muslims in Christchurch, New Zealand showed us, the kinds of rhetoric the president uses has very real and tragic consequences. This practice is a form of “scripted violence” that remotely triggers supporters who then perpetrate violence against Trump’s named scapegoats.

More than anyone else in Congress, Rep. Omar knows the horrific results of extremism and violence given her personal experience as a child survivor of the Somali civil war. Not only is her life in danger, she has seen where this kind of dehumanizing rhetoric, and framing of an entire people as the enemy, can lead: not only individual vigilante violence, but war and genocide.

DSA is proud to stand in solidarity with Rep. Ilhan Omar, one of the bravest voices currently in Congress defending democracy and fighting for policies like Medicare for All. We join all people of conscience, regardless of their political beliefs, in rejecting it in the strongest possible terms.

State Democrats Vote to Oppose DC Dems Policy of Blacklisting Vendors

By Bethel Prescott April 19, 2019

At the beginning of this month, Washington State Democrats held a meeting in Pasco. One important decision made there highlights an anti-democratic choice made by some power players in DC.

The Washington State Dems voted to to call out the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. In March the DCCC announced a policy that stated they would blacklist any vendor who chooses to work to support any Democrat who challenges an incumbent Congressman who happens to have a D next to their name. This policy is obviously intended to slam a lid down on candidates who hope to fight for issues such as the Green New Deal and Medicare for All.

We applaud the work of Democrats, such as Marysville’s Jason Call, who wrote the resolution which directs Washington State Democrats to ignore the DCCC’s policy.
